Under the heading Infrastructure Ventures, HOCHTIEF Concessions examines opportunities for opening up new fields of business. At present, for instance, the company is developing two geothermal power plants as public-private partnership (PPP) models.
The efficient, reliable and sustainable provision of energy – such as electricity, heat and refrigeration – is one of the major challenges of the 21st century. In fact, the best provider of energy is nature itself. By engaging in this growth market, HOCHTIEF Concessions is tapping into a new and innovative business field and utilizing natural resources in a responsible manner.
As a first step, HOCHTIEF Concessions puts the heat found deep beneath the earth's surface – geothermal energy – to commercial use. In October 2007, subsidiary HOCHTIEF PPP Solutions, together with partners, founded Süddeutsche Geothermie-Projekte Gesellschaft (SGG). SGG plans, builds, finances and operates geothermal power plants in the South German Molasse basin (Bavaria). By combining the core competencies of its partners, it is the first company to cover the entire development chain, from realization to subsequent operation of geothermal projects.
In this, HOCHTIEF Concessions uses its own experience and that of other HOCHTIEF corporate units to position itself effectively for the complex and interdisciplinary challenges found in the field of renewable energies.
HOCHTIEF has been committed for many years to the sustainable use of the environment and natural resources. The innovative product segment of geothermal energy makes an active contribution to climate protection, because geothermal plants reduce carbon dioxide emissions and unlike other sources of renewable energy generate electricity all year round. This base load capacity puts this alternative technology in a position to replace conventional power stations.
